Benefits of Exercise

Let’s look at the benefits of exercise.

Regular exercise:

  • Improves self-esteem, energy levels and sleep patterns!
  • Provides ability to better  cope with stress
  • Improves emotional resilience
  • Increases quality of life, provides improved feeling of well being
  • Lower risk of heart attack and stroke
  • Lower diabetes risk
  • Lower risk of many cancers e.g. bowel, prostate
  • Enhances weight control by reducing body fat
  • Provides strength, flexibility and agility
  • Provides dementia protection
  • Improves bone health
  • Improves immune system
  • Provides time for self and general ‘escape’ time

What sort of exercise is best?

Long, steady-state, aerobic activity.

40 minutes or more

4 times per week or more

for the next 50 years…or more!

Alternatively you can do short, sharp work that gets your heart rate up very high. Of course the best is a combination of endurance, sprint and strength work, with a liberal smattering of flexibility and agility exercises as well.

Max HR   =    220 minus your age

Heart rate Training Zone = 70% to 85% of your Max HR
